Hello Kitty Garden Party birthday cupcakes

The original plan for Ariary’s 2nd birthday was to purchase sombreros for everyone and head to the local Mexican restaurant. No prep. No cleaning. Easy. Right? However, with one week to pull things together, I felt guilty and went with a Hello Kitty Garden Party instead. Yes, a garden themed party in the middle of February.

Ariary adores cats and the most famous cat in the world would have to be Hello Kitty. Thankfully, Amazon.com had a large collection of Hello Kitty supplies. Unfortunately, they are quite expensive. So, I settled for purchasing marshmallow pops and napkins with the Hello Kitty theme and a pack of brightly colored scrapbook paper to match the napkins, picket fence cupcake wrappers, and gummy butterflies. Everything else came from Walmart.

At Walmart, I picked up green tissue paper, clay pots, seed packets, and Hello Kitty stickers. After packaging it up as cute as can be with a Hello Kitty marshmallow pop and some of the gummy butterflies, I wrapped it in clear cellophane and finished it with curling ribbon. These made the cutest party favors but also served as party decorations.

I also had party blowers resting in a butterfly net and made headbands for each of the children. For the headbands, the ears were made from white felt and the ribbon was pink grosgrain.

Since it was cold outside, I prepared a vegetable beef stew for the adults and called it, “Hello Kitty’s Harvest Pot.” The children enjoyed peanut butter sandwiches cut into Hello Kitty faces and decorated with pieces of black olives for eyes, baby carrot tips for the nose, chives for the whiskers, and hand-cut American cheese singles for the bow. (It didn’t take as long as you might be thinking.)

We also served tortilla chips and salsa, grapes, strawberries, carrots, celery, broccoli, ranch dip, crackers, cheese sticks, and bottled water that was wrapped in the same scrapbooking paper from the banner.

Hello Kitty Garden Cupcakes

For the cupcakes, I used a scallop and circle punch to make the cupcake picks. (Don’t miss the free printable Hello Kitty faces below.) Instead of using glue and needing to wait for it to dry, I secured each toothpick to the cupcake label with a small piece of clear packaging tape.

The cupcakes were baked in white liners which fit inside the picket fence wrappers from Wilton. I made a homemade buttercream icing, tinted with green, blue, and yellow, and swirled it around the top of the cupcake with a large star tip.

On top of each cupcake, I placed a cupcake pick, gummy butterfly and Wilton flower sprinkles.

Helly Kitty Party Games

Since the party was put together in a week, we kept the number of guests very small. That did not leave much room for games. I thought about passing around a ball of yarn like a rendition of “hot potato” but settled for free Hello Kitty coloring pages and a ball toss game.

For the ball toss, I used recycled drink carriers, index cards, and the scrapbooking paper I had purchased. Each hole was assigned an amount and the children took turns tossing fur ping pong balls into the carrier. The person with the most points won a package of Hello Kitty bandages.
